O futebol regressa a casa

Todos os que visitaram Inglaterra durante o Campeonato da Europa de 1996 não esquecem o ambiente de festa que se sentia nas ruas das diversas cidades sede da competição. Estádios cheios, muita festa e emoção, e uma ideia sempre presente: «Football is coming home» [O futebol regressa a casa].

Os ingleses, inventores do jogo, que apenas haviam recebido uma competição em 1966, quando se tinham sagrado campeões do mundo, olhavam para 1996 como uma oportunidade única de voltar a fazer história.

Imbuídos nesse espírito de saudosismo e esperança na vitória, a dupla de comediantes David Baddiel e Frank Skinner, associada a Ian Broudie, vocalista e mentor dos Lightning Seeds, apresentou uma canção que apaixonou a Inglaterra e os fãs dos outros países que visitaram o Reino Unido durante a competição.

A música chamava-se Three Lions 96 [Três Leões 96], com os três leões a fazerem referência ao símbolo da FA que a seleção inglesa usa orgulhosamente na sua camisola branca.

A letra lembrava algumas das grandes vedetas do futebol inglês, assim como recordava que a Taça Jules Rimet, conquistada em 1966, ainda brilhava...

Mas o curioso da história, é que a música acabaria por se tornar um sucesso enorme na Alemanha, que acabaria por vencer a competição, depois de deixar a Inglaterra pelo caminho. E tudo acabou com os alemães a cantarem «Football is Coming Home» com a Taça na mão, já depois de terem regressado a casa...
